"In case any person, sentenced to or imprisoned in the penitentiary, or sentenced to or confined at hard labor for a county anywhere in the state, becomes insane, the physician in attendance on said convict shall report the fact to the governor,...; if said convict is declared to be insane and fit to be sent to the hospital for insane persons, the governor shall direct the proper officer to apply to the superintendent at Tuscaloosa for the admission of the insane convict into the hospital...." (Ala. Code, Chap. 34, Sect. 1456 [1923]). The governor is required to report his actions concerning convicts to the legislature at each session. (Ala. Constitution, Art. V, Sect. 124 [1901]). This series consists of executive orders authorizing the transfer of a convict to an asylum. Each order lists the prisoner's name, county, crime, date convicted, sentence, and gives a statement approving the transfer along with governor's signature, the date, and the attesting mark of the secretary of state. Some of the records were created under the Board of Pardons (1901-1939)) during the administration of Governors Benjamin Meek Miller (1931-1935) and Bibb Graves (1935-1939). The other records were created under the Board of Pardons and Paroles during the administrations of Frank Dixon (1939-1943), Chauncey Sparks (1943-1947), James E. Folsom, Sr. (1947-1951 and 1955-1959), Gordon Persons (1951-1955), John Patterson (1959-1963), George C. Wallace (1963-1967 and 1971-1979), Lurleen B. Wallace (1967-1968), and Albert P. Brewer (1968-1971).
